It is <strong>compulsory in Spain<\/strong>\u00a0as it is always requiredto:<\/p>\n<p><strong><!--more--><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open a bank account<\/li>\n<li>Purchases or insure a property<\/li>\n<li>Arrange a mortgage<\/li>\n<li>Pay taxes<\/li>\n<li>Be paid for employment<\/li>\n<li>Establish a business<\/li>\n<li>Apply for a driving licence<\/li>\n<li>Etc&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">How to obtain the Nie number?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>To obtain the NIE number you must present the application form <strong>in person<\/strong> at the Police Station where the property is located (<em>Comisar\u00eda<\/em>), at the foreigner\u00b4s department (<em>Oficina de extranjer\u00eda<\/em>) or at your nearest Spanish Consulate at home. <strong>Since April 2012 however<\/strong>, it is allowed<strong> to apply the NIE<\/strong> <strong>by a representative<\/strong>, that is,\u00a0 you can sign\u00a0a<strong> Power of Attorney and have someone to represent you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You will have to<strong> pay<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>a less than 20\u20ac fee<\/strong> at the bank\u00a0, and present the receipt together with the\u00a0application form dully fulfilled and both your original passport and a copy.<\/p>\n<p>Once it\u00a0is presented, they will let you know when it will be ready for collection.
