2009 Annual Jurismus Conference

Last weekend, Jurismus, the network of young lawyers of Eurojuris International, celebrated its 2009 Annual Conference in Pamplona.

Made up of 109 lawyers, Jurismus is the network for the young lawyers of Eurojuris International, and has a presence in 19 countries in Europe and correspondents in several other countries throughout the world. Eurojuris International is the first European network of law firms with a presence in all of the European Union countries, and with correspondents throughout the world. In Pamplona, the network is associated with the Arpa Abogados law firm. In Spain, Marina Bugallal, lawyer and partner of Mariscal & Asociados, Abogados, is the President of the Eurojuris España network; Eurojuris España is also made up of 18 law firms established throughout the Spanish territory. The purpose of Eurojuris International is to encourage exchanges of thoughts and experiences among young lawyers. This inspiration is intended to provoke such exchanges not only in a legal sense, but also in cultural and social aspects, establishing international professional contacts through attending conferences and participating in international groups of legal specialities in comparative law.

The 2009 Annual Jurismus Conference in Pamplona is the 15th edition. In this occasion a total of 54 lawyers attended from the following places: France, Germany, Austria, Greece, Italy, Belgium, Holland, Poland, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Ukraine, New York, Mexico, and Spain.

Year after year the participation in these conferences increases in the number of countries represented. These events provide an excellent opportunity not only for professional exchanges, but also cultural ones among those young lawyers who will soon become the leaders of Europe’s law firms.

The 2009 Annual Jurismus Conference contained subject matter concerning the distinct protocols of international negotiation. ‘‘The cultural differences in the international commercial world”,’ for which Ms. María Herreros was responsible; ‘‘The rules of protocol to create business in India”,’ for which Mr. Jayant Khobragade, Economic Counsellor for the Indian Embassy in Spain, was responsible; ‘‘Protocol for creating business in China”,‘ for which Mr. Joaquín Romero, Secretary of Exterior Commerce, was responsible; ‘‘How to invest in Navarre”, or ‘‘How companies in Navarre invest in foreign entities‘,’ for which representatives from Sodena and the Chamber of Commerce of Navarre were responsible. The meeting took place in a state-run hotel (“Parador”) of Olite, a small medieval village located 40 kilometres from Pamplona, whose antiquity dates back to the 12th century.

Within this professional and cultural exchange, the Jurismus group was received by Pamplona’s City Hall on behalf of the First Lieutenant Mayor and City Councillor, Mr. José Iribas Sánchez of Boado, and Ms. Maite Esporrín Lasheras, City Councillor of the Socialist Party. Ms. Maite Esporrín Lasheras was also in charge of setting off the traditional artificial fire of the rocket (“chupinazo”), which every year on July 6 at noon marks the beginning of the San Fermín celebration.

The tasting of the local foods, the visit to the wineries of the area, provoking the bulls (“capea”), or the visit to the castle of Olite are just some of the pre-San Fermín celebration activities that contributed to this Conference.

As the climax of the event, the participants were able to prolong their stay to experience these celebrations in person, understand their significance, and participate in the tradition. These celebrations helped achieve a fusion of the distinct cultures that made up the group with the cultures of Pamplona and Spain. Guided and advised at all times by Mr. Fernando Armendáriz, partner of the law firm Arpa Abogados, which represents the Eurojuris España network in Pamplona and San Sebastián, combined with the law firm’s members’ excellent organizational job, the 2009 Annual Jurismus Conference was a resounding success. The quality that the Jurismus network, and therefore Eurojuris España and Eurojuris International put into all of that which they seek to do should be highlighted once more.
